Terms & Conditions

Selection Process

Selection for the exhibition is now by pre-selection from digital images on CD or DVD.  Up to 2 different views of each 2D or 3D art work or 30 second sample of new media work entered is allowed.

 

How to enter

Fill out the following Entry Form

Enclose the following:

·          $50 handling fee for each work (cheque, money order or credit card).

·          jpeg image/s less than 1MB, to CD or DVD. CD or DVDs MUST be labelled with the artist name and title of the work.

·          artist statement (if relevant) – no more than 50 words

·          support material for John Coburn Award – see below

Post these items to The Blake society, Prize account,

GPO Box 4484 Sydney NSW 2001 by 5 p.m., Friday 27 June 2008.

 

John Coburn Award

The aim of this award is to acknowledge and promote the work of emerging artists.

1.        All entries for the Emerging Artist Award must adhere to the General Conditions & Terms of the Blake Prize.

2.        Each entrant must pay the $50 Blake Prize entry fee & complete the Blake Prize Entry Form.

3.        An additional entry fee, on top of the $50 Blake Prize entry fee, will NOT be charged to enter this Award category.

4.        All entries must indicate they wish to be considered for the Emerging Professional Artist Award on the entry form.

5.        One winner will be chosen.

6.        Applicants for this award will be:

·          Practising professional artists AND

·          Emerging Artists AND

·          Australian Citizens or have permanent resident status in Australia

7.        Selection for the John Coburn Emerging Artist Award will be based upon the following:

·          Artistic merit and well-developed concepts

·          Work that is of recognisable religious or spiritual integrity

·          A committed artistic practice and vision of a professional career

8.        All entries to the John Coburn Emerging Artist Award must be accompanied by the following support material:

·          A curriculum vitae, no more than 1 x A4 page in length

·          Contact details of 2 professional references

·          An artist’s statement (50 words)

 

General Conditions

1.        All entries must be original work done within two years previous to the date set for entry of works for the exhibition.

2.        Any work for which the fee has not been received will be ineligible for the competition.  The Blake Prize is non-profit making and all fees are non-returnable and associated with the exhibition expenses.

3.        Each artist may enter 2 works.

4.        Digital images must be in jpeg format only, maximum file size 1MB

5.        Photographs, photocopied reproductions or any other representation of the work will not be accepted.

6.        All CDs/DVDs will be retained by the Society.

7.        Where indicated by the entrant, and provided all criteria is met, all works can be considered for the Blake Prize and John Coburn Emerging Artist Award

8.        Artwork specifications:

PAINTING & 2D WORKS: Paintings, 2D works or multiple panels must be limited to the total size of 170 cms x 250 cms. 

·          2 images of each work may be entered including one detail and one full size image.

SCULPTURES: Sculptures should not exceed 200 cms in any one dimension and should not exceed 80 kgs in overall weight.

·          2 images of each work may be entered including one detail and one full size image.

NEW MEDIA:   Entries for pre-selection should be self playable and no longer than 30 seconds in duration.  Please include the total duration of the piece on your CD/DVD.

9.        The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence shall be entered into.

10.      Reproduction: Each entrant consents to the reproduction and/or publication of his/her work by newspapers, magazines, television, electronic or other means, and consents to his/her work being photographed and/or used for any or all of the purposes of publicity, criticism, review, research, archives, reports and/or reference in

connection with the activities of the Blake Society Ltd and/or any

 

 

exhibition or publication authorised by the Blake Society Ltd.

11.      Compliance: The Society has the right to ask any artist for a Statutory Declaration that the work is his/her own original work and has been executed within the specified time and that all components relating to the work have full copyright clearance.

12.    Reservation: Where the work can be considered a health hazard, or other physical risk to any members of the public, or in breach of Occupational Health and Safety and/or Workcover guidelines, the Society reserves the right to withdraw work for selection.

13.      Queries: Any questions not covered will be directed to the Blake Society whose decision is final.

14.      All artists will be advised of the decisions of the judges by email and/or letter, detailing whether or not selected/exhibited/touring/delivery & collection details.

 

Finalist Exhibition

1.        All works selected for exhibition will be listed on the Society’s website by 5pm on Monday 11 August, 2008.

2.        Artists will need to deliver works to the NAS Gallery by Friday 22 August (couriers) or Saturday 23 August (loca/self delivery).

3.        Artists accept responsibility for organising all transport matters including costs of the delivery and collection of works.

4.        Painting and 2D works: No hanging devices should be included. No glass, no mirrors, if works require glazing, Perspex should be used.

5.        Sculptures:  must be well constructed to assure safety during handling, installation and display.

6.        New Media: should be self-playable. All necessary software must be included as part of the support material.

7.        New media will be exhibited under normal Gallery lighting conditions. 

8.        If entering web-based work, please supply off-line version on CD (no URLs). Please include plugins, players and preferred browser on CD. If entering sound-based work, please supply on CD only.

9.        Full installation instructions, must be included with your work, no matter what medium.

10.      The exhibition closes on Saturday 4 October.  Artists whose works are not selected to tour should collect their work from the Gallery, National Art School on 10 and 11 October 2008 10a.m. to 4.00p.m. 

11.      At the conclusion of the exhibition, works will be available for collection, unwrapped. 

12.      Commission: A 30% commission will be charged on all works sold during the exhibition (details available from The Society on request).

13.      Sale of Works and the GST. No GST is payable to the Blake Society, however GST liability may exist between the artist and the Gallery for the commission due. The Society and the Gallery both need to know the GST status of the artist before the work will be accepted. The Society or exhibiting Gallery will account to the artist for the sale net of commission and GST, where applicable.  It is the artist’s responsibility to account to the ATO for GST on the sale and to the exhibiting Gallery for GST on the commission, if GST applies. The Blake Society is not registered for the GST and is not required to register.

14.      Insurance: The Blake Society will not be responsible for loss of or damage to any entry while in its custody.  Each artist is responsible for maintaining their own insurance cover and their insurance arrangements with their carrier.

15.      Uncollected works: Uncollected works will be subject to weekly storage charges of $11 per week or part week (incl. GST).  If an entrant fails to collect his/her work as provided in these conditions, the Society, after sending notice by post to the competitor at the last known address giving one month's notice of their intention to sell or otherwise dispose of such work, or in the event of no address of the competitor being known to the Society, then one month after advertising notice of such intention in a newspaper, may sell such work and after deducting from the proceeds the costs of and incidentals to the sale shall hold any balance for the competitor provided however, that in the event of such work being in the opinion of the Society unsaleable then the Society may in lieu of selling the same, destroy or otherwise dispose of it in such a manner as they deem fit and thereafter the Society shall be under no liability whatever to the competitor in respect of any work so destroyed or disposed of.

 

Tour

1.        Touring Works:  Not all works included in the 2008 Exhibition will be selected for the 2009 tour due to the physical limitations and restrictions of some works. The winning work is required to tour.

2.        If your work is included in the Blake Prize Tour, you will be advised where and when your work can be collected.

3.        If your work is new-media based it will be posted back to you.
